CEVO L4D Tournament Format Update

Tournament Structure:

Due to an overwhelming number of requests, we have decided to expand the L4D tournament playoff to 32 teams. The format will remain double elimination with the top team in each group advancing in one of the top 24 seeds, with the last 8 seeds being filled by wild card teams ranked by the CPI.

Updated Brackets: http://www.cevo.com/playoffs/bracket.php?id=666

Feedback:

As always, we are still looking for your feedback. We would love to hear what you think of anything related to competitive L4D and how we can improve our events. Feel free to leave your suggestions in the comments section.

Now all we need is for death-pulls to be made illegal, and bunny hopping to be made legal, and CEVO will be awesome. But seriously, made no sense to me having 24 teams, and a bunch of byes... some of us were sitting in vent yesterday trying to figure out how it would work haha, so this solution not only mollifies the people who are complaining about just missing the playoffs, but also makes the tournament structure much more cohesive. Well done.

How do these seeds work? They don't seem very organized lol

CEVO|Curtis
They are organized. Very simple actually.

Each group winner (1-24) seeded in order of CPI.

Then 8 additional Teams added (25-32) Based on there CPI. So teams that didnt win there group but were still ranked high are seeded after the 24 winners.

Yet with this same system, teams that have higher CPI then other TOP SEEDS of other groups, do not get to go!

The CPI system is flawed for L4D. FFW should have counted 100% of a normal win and a FFW counted double of what it is now :(. If this was true we would have rightfully gone to playoffs in our group as our TOP seed had a FFL for round 7. Also within the same group we simply didnt get the same amount of actual game-play against teams as our top seed did :(.

For our group the decision came down to our top seed getting to play 1 extra game then us, and yet going to playoffs with a FFL. Most likely something similar to this happened with other groups too :(

Yeah I know its hard. But unfortuantly, with group play that is one of the downfalls. CPI can only base its self on teams you play against, and all those team only play the same 6. So some groups were able to have higher CPI's due to the fact that they had a more active group. Others unfortuantly were not.

This is a tournement though. In league play, you are given make up matches to account for the FF's. Something to look forward too.

Yea, I apologize, a teammate and I sat down and figured it out and it's definitely correct, nothing CEVO can really do, this is the best possible way to seed unfortunately. Nice job

Honestly, I don't understand most of the complaints. I've viewed this tournament as a segway into league, and a way for CEVO to test if there was enough interest to warrant a L4D league. That something like 100 teams were actually playing their matches is a step in the right direction, even if the system was not perfect, and some of the rules were a bit underdeveloped. Props to CEVO on supporting the budding L4D community, and hopefully this tournament helps gather interest for league play.

I don't really understand the double elimination. Does the loser's bracket ever meet back up with the undefeated bracket? From what I can tell, it looks like a single elimination event where losers get the consolation of extra practice... so long as they don't lose twice.

-Shoulda looked closer... seems that the winner of the loser bracket gets put into the finals of the full event. Very nice...

The bracket meets up at the end likes its supposed too.

The winner of the loser bracket goes to the championship game.

Thus double elmination. Everyone must be beaten twice to lose out completly with of course the exception of the finals match.

actually, wouldnt the finals require the winner of the Loser Bracket to win twice? so finals game 1, if the winner of the winner bracket wins, tourney over. if the winner of the loser bracket wins, it goes to a game 2, which decides the final winner.

"actually, wouldnt the finals require the winner of the Loser Bracket to win twice?" -QFT

The fact that the one team made it to the very end undefeated is completely meaningless if you keep it as is. Furthermore, the loser bracket team likely played worse competition en route to the finals as well. Would you perhaps reconsider your position Curtis?

How is it meaningless lol? The team that goes undefeated gets a Bye to the final round while the team that takes a loss has to play another game with the top of the loser bracket in order to make the finals... This isn't exactly epically hard to understand IMO and I would be surprised by all the complaining if I hadn't been around L4D for awhile. It's double elimination EXCEPT for the finals.
