Team Fortress 2 - Tournament Playoffs

CEVO™ LLC. (www.cevo.com) announces today the Team Fortress 2 - $1,000 FREE Tournament Playoffs. The event, which will happen throughout November, serves as the playoffs for the inaugural TF2 tournament and our way at ranking teams as we prepare for our first TF2 competitive league event.

The top ranked team from each group will move on to the single elimination round. Teams will play two matches a week until a winner is crowned. Seedings will be announced on Tuesday, November 6th after all matches have been played and reported.

Single Elimination Seeds:

1. Comedy Option
2. zero five zero
3. Hostile Takeover
4. Team Warchild
5. Saget In Tights
6. the doctors
7. Paradigm Shift
8. Adrenaline Gamer
9. Balloons
10. The Experiment
11. strictly business
12. dorks with tranquilizers
13. BOSS
14. Random New Clan
15. Team Pandemic
16. Jailbait
17. Underground KingZ
18. Midnight Tokers
19. Tap Dat Ass
20. 407 Death Clan
21. CAP n Crunch (Wildcard)
22. EPIC (Wildcard)
23. Digital Jedi (Wildcard)
24. Nurfed (Wildcard)

NOTE: While the group play standings were based solely on the CPI system. The seedings for the single elimination round are completely random generated using http://random.org/lists/. Since the groups were random and there is no real fair way to decide who had a tough/easy group we feel that there is no way to rank the teams at this point. We have also decided to add 4 wildcard spots to fill out our bracket. The wildcards were selected from the teams that were second in their group with the highest CPI.

More information on the CPI can be found here: http://www.cevo.com/?page=forum&func=viewthread&id=4120

Maps & Dates:

Round 1 - cp_well (Monday, November 12th)
Round 2 - cp_granary (Thursday, November 15th)

Round 4 - cp_gravelpit (Thursday, November 22nd)
Round 5 - cp_well (Monday, November 26th)

Feedback:

As our first tournament begins to wind down, we are looking for your feedback. We would love to hear what you think of anything related to competitive TF2, rules, maps, or anything else you can think of. We are using this tournament to get a feel for the game and community before we open up registration for a full league.

Random seeding?
No way to know who the good teams are?
Thats a joke right?

Its a new game!

Feedback: Stopwatch is needed for dustbowl, gravel pit to settle ties.

heineken Evo Points: 1
Maybe a little less playing of well and a little more dustbowl. We will play well a total of 4 times, and dustbowl 1 time.
I agree with Konig on the stopwatch for dustbowl/gravelpit. There is really no other way to do it.
I'd also like to see the last map be dustbowl instead of Well again.

ohh its no joke brad. There is no fair way to rank the teams coming out of group play. The groups were random so obviously some groups are going to be harder than others. Since matches were only scheduled inter group, the CPI does not account for teams outside of your group. At CEVO we always try our hardest to remove any and all bias from our seeding/playoff selection so the only real option we were left with was to go with random seeds.

how were wild cards decided? really too bad that pure and exile miss out just beacuse they had much tougher groups than everyone else, one bad round and youre out of the whole tournament.

meanwhile there are 4-5 clans there that they are clearly superior too.

still, this bracket represents almost every top team in TF2 right now, going to be a very good tournament, especially since these will be the first official matches between these teams in almost every case.

you should throw in some more wildcards and make it 32 teams. it shouldn't upset anything. just make for prettier brackets and help a few of the forfeit-hosed teams feel less hosed.
32-16-8-4-2-1
24-12-6-3-?
another round robin?

I have a few concerns.

Firstly I understand adding the 4 wildcard teams, good decision. The bad decision was to allow those wildcard teams to get a bye on the 1st week after not winning there division. Those 4 teams should have gotten the lowest 4 rankings and seeded THEN the random order for everyone else should have been put into play.

Secondly, somekind of stopwatch mod should be enabled, or disable getting extra time for gaining a cap and make it so you have (for example) 8 mins total to get all points and you fail to get them in the time then you loose the game point.

Again I understand why you had to do the random seeding and I'm not faulting you for it but if any of you have been scriming you should be able to know who atleast the top teams are. I still think you guys are doing a good job for your first tourney and having to change the rules as you go to better suit competitive play. I do have 1 final question though, (well 2) are you going to have an official league for tf2 after this and if so, will this tourney serve as some kind of indicator of what teams will get into what divisions? (i.e cevo-p, cevo-m, a)

We are just waiting on the closure of one last dispute before we schedule the matches and they are completely final. Should be resolved in the next hour or so.

I understand you didn't have a way to judge competition across groups very well but it doesn't exactly make sense to have cases where you seeded teams that finished second in their groups ahead of the ones that finished first in their groups. They get a first round bye over the team that beat them? It is what it is though.

this whole thing needs to be relooked at in my opion..

qft ^^

How is it fair for those two wildcards to have a bye? I don't get it, they're lucky to be in the playoffs even, and are happy about that...They SHOULD NOT receive a bye also. ie CNC losing to TDA, then getting a bye round 1. While TDA has to face dr. r2 if they advance from the first round. Sorry CEVO, I think you really missed the ball on this one. How did the wildcards even earn their wildcard spot, was that random too?

The Wildcards should be set as the bottom seeds, then the byes given out to the teams who made the playoffs randomly.

The wildcards should've been made the bottom seeds, then put the rest of the teams in the randomizer. Sounds more fair and reasonable to me.

..or add 8 more teams to fill in the byes.

There were quite a few teams in second place in their group that were boned by the FFW CPI system.

Nothing like getting penalized in a tourney because your opponent quits.

UPDATE: We have made an update to the seeds and brackets. The Wildcards are now seeded at the very bottom of the list. New schedules will be out shortly. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused teams who had already scheduled. One thing we are not afraid to do at CEVO is admit when we have made a mistake. The original Seedings were completely random and it was an oversight on our part that had the wildcards mixed in with the 1st place teams. Again, we are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you, but we are happy to make things right.

Re-seeding makes sense, sorry to the clans who have a tougher road because of it!

Also, to a address a few of you out there bitching about seeding: It's not fair or right to base rankings on anything other than matches played in this tournament. We may know who the best clans are from scrimming, but scrims should not play a factor in tournament seedings under any circumstances. Official matches from other leagues shouldn't either, for that matter.
